I've been thinking of 100 different ways. . . .

Today's blog is brought to you by, STRUCTURES THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN MORE THOUGHT

I've been thinking about trying a creative writing exercise. You know how artists will take an object like a coffee cup and draw that same object from different angles every day for a specified number of days?

Well, I was wondering if maybe I could benefit from a similar exercise as a writer. Maybe I should pick an object that I see everyday, like a tree or a building etc. and try to think of 100 different ways to describe that one object.

Has anyone ever tried that before? Anyone want to try it with me?

Now .. . . what object should I pick? hmmmmm . . . .

Pick a food--something good, so you'll enjoy describing taste!

I think that's a splendid idea!
I might have to try this sometime, then use the descriptions to write a poem!
Here are some suggestions you could pick from:
a red ripe raspberry
a famous painting
a mosquito
a pile of vomit (you could use April's experiences for this one...okay that one is a joke. did it make you laugh or gag? ;)

We used to do this with pennies in our classroom -- gave each child one and asked them to go around the circle and state one detail they noticed. It was a great details exercise.

Maybe your object should be the elephant playground...

why not pick a location? That way you can go for different moods, atmostphere, weather, lightings, seasons, etc...

This is an excellent idea!

Another exercise that's similar is to take an object (or a location or a mood, anything) and describe it in ten words or less. This can really hone your desciptive skills.

Great idea. It'll be interesting to see how the description changes depending on your mood.
Maybe try something very simple like a slice of bread, or something complex like your computer...

I must admit I haven't tried this. It sounds kinda hard. Almost harder than writing a novel. ;)

I'm sad you won't be at the summer conference! I'm not sure if I'll make the one in NC this year. I have a bunch of weddings that month, and they all require travel. :( Thanks for the awesome purple song. I love it!

I think this is a good idea. I know someone who does this every time she's written herself into a corner.
