inspiration

I'm still working on the stinking !@#$@#% synopsis. So far I've got it down from 2 pages to 1. The reason I'm doing this is because I want to submit to an agent that accepts queries only. Right now I have a synopsis that is about 1/2 page, but I don't think it highlights the unique qualities of the story. It doesn't sparkle! Since the agent only accepts queries, I figure I better make it sparkle and highlight what makes the story unique. It's hard. It's really really hard.

The only glimmer of joy in trying to write a better synopsis is that I've been able to revisit some of my favorite scenes and remember the inspiration behind them.

One of my favorite chapters is when my protagonist goes to obtain a Charm that is guarded by an eccentric painter and his minions of impish monkeys. It's a chapter about how things aren't always as the seem. . . .

Artwork by Edgar Muller

One of the main inspirations behind this chapter comes from 3D chalk art much like this one found at moillusions.com

Cool, huh? I never get tired of looking at these. They never cease to amaze me!

A synopsis is SO MUCH harder than a story. Can it sparkle as much as the actual manuscript?

The artwork is awesome.

Have you thought about posting the short synopsis here for opinions?

Hi Sherrie. I doubt a synopsis can sparkle more than the MS, but I think it should sparkle enough to make an agent want to see just how sparkly the MS is. ;0)

Hi Aimee! I'm thinking about posting the longer synposis once I have it polished more. Thnx.

I tried having minions of impish monkeys once but it didn't work out. In the end I found that heckling hyenas do twice the job at half the pay.

you know, Ian, you almost make it sound like having minions of impish monkeys is a bad idea. . . surely you jest.

Now, typing monkeys would be worth an arm and a leg.

C.R. Evers said...

LOL, Aimee! Now that you mention it . . . some cleaning monkeys would be nice too! Then I'd be able to give the typing monkeys some time off. ;0)

I need cleaning monkeys too, but somehow I have three lil monkeys who make messes!
I love that chalk art! Sooooo cool!

I hear ya Kelly! My 3 lil monkeys make messes faster than one momma can keep up with! That's why I need a whole army of cleaning monkeys. Only one just won't cut it!

You have my sympathy on the synopsis writing, Christy. I just sent one off, but I doubt it sparkled quite as much as it should, despite all the effort.

With a picture like that for inspiration (LOVE his art work) you are sure to succeed with your synopsis.

I just realized the above sounds like a fortune cookie!

Hey Kate! Good luck to you w/ your submission!

Bish, LOL! I hope my fortune comes true!

That's such a cool idea, and a nifty painting too.

Good luck on the synopsis. They ARE hard, aren't they?

Queries or not, always send a couple sample pages. Always. They will almost certainly be read. And Andrea Brown stated this herself.

I love those chalk drawings!
Good luck with the synopsis. I'm intrigued by the eccentric painter and his impish monkeys...

Wow I love that artwork! Best of luck with the query and synopsis!!

Carrie, Thnx. And yes . . . they aren't just hard, they are eViL!

Ian, I hear fried twinkies aren't bad either.

Thnx Kelly!

PJ. Wow! Thnx for letting me know. I had no idea. That's good info to have.

Thnx Adrienne. I hope an editor or agent will be intrigued too! :0)

Edith, Thnx!

You know that ridiculously awful query I posted on my blog that I wrote for Query Shark? I cleaned it up and fixed it's hair and made it brush its teeth and sent it out to exactly two agencies as a feeler. I got a request for 30 pages today.

*faint*

YaY Aimee!!!! Congrats! Best of luck to you!!!!!! Let me know how it works out.

That pesky synopsis! You have my sympathies.

But I love the artwork. Very cool.

Hang in there girl. You are doing fantastic if you got it down to 1 page. Wow! Keep polishing.

Hey Im sure you know this - but a query is a paragraph or two as an overview - maybe with a cliff hanger and a synopsis is a one pager summary of whole book including ending.

YOu just mentioned "querying" agents so I wanted to mention it just in case synopsis are hard! good luck :)

Thnx, JA and Christina!

Thnx Shelli. I did a lot of reading about a synopsis and I read that they could be up to 4 pages long, although shorter is better. All this writerly stuff is so confusing! Argh! I'll keep condensing.
